Violence Against Women Online Dating Secret Friends Guide
Violence Against Women Often Begins In The Dating Phase
By Janine Jensenoris
Violence against women is at the forefront of the international
agenda right now. In places like the Middle East and
Africa, poverty, illiteracy and customary traditions
are said to be at fault for the increasing waves of
sexual and physical abuse against women.
However, in more industrialized nations, the profiles
are quite different, with the majority of abused women
coming from households making over $50,000/year. Most
female victims hold a high school diploma or have attended
some college. Additionally, most American victims are
white and between 35 and 55 years of age.
Typically Starts In The Dating Phase
In America, violence against females typically starts
in the dating phase. Many women are drawn to men who
appear confident, assertive and intensely interested
in them. However, abusers are generally as passionate
in anger as they are in love and quickly a romantic
relationship becomes a continuous cycle of fighting
and making up.
In some cases, the men are very remorseful when they
see their partners taking steps to leave them, which
is all part of their control, where women think, "Well
he didn’t mean it. Deep down he must love me.
I probably deserved it."
In other cases, the controlling behavior reveals itself
in shoving, punching, slapping, pinching and physical
violence. This is the the time when you need to review
your options, before more serious violence takes place,
including physical assault and battery.
Early Warning Signs
There are often early warning signs such as not letting
you hang out with your friends, calling frequently to
find out where you are and who you’re with, telling
you what to wear, having to be around you all the time,
name-calling, jealousy or belittling you.
Many women in these dysfunctional relationships are
also victims of sexual abuse, which includes unwanted
touching, forced sex, unprotected sex or forced sex
acts that are hurtful or demeaning.
Men who assault women are manipulative by nature and
may claim that they were "hurt in the past,"
citing that as an excuse for their seemingly irrational
jealousy. They often use tearful apologies or a whole
host of other tactics to lure you back. In some cases,
these tactics include forceful violence against
women.
Fear Retaliation From Their Partner
Every year there are many cases of violence against
women that do not get reported. It is estimated that
only 1/5 of victims of intimate partner violence with
physical injuries make it to the hospital for treatment.
Some women fear the retaliation of their partner, while
others feel the abuse is a "private matter."
A third rationale is that the victims feel the police
will do nothing about the situation and as a result,
their life will become even more horrific. The reality
is that domestic abuse is a crime and one that should
not be taken lightly. Between 1976 and 1996, 4 women
were murdered by their partner each day!
