Valentine Day Ideas With Surprising Gifts And Good Deeds
By John Rafter
You may be planning a night of romantic seduction for
Valentine’s Day. You’ve got the jewelry all picked out,
the wine is chilling, and there are flowers everywhere.
If you go by the advertising, then this is the essence
of what Valentine’s Day is all about.
Yet not everyone in the world is paired off, and not
everyone is able to plan a celebration, whether for
financial or health reasons, or something else. What
about children? This should be a day for them too. In
fact, there are a great many Valentine Day ideas that
take the celebration of this day well beyond just romance.
Throwing a party for kids on the weekend before February
14th is one way to involve them in the special celebration.
Naturally, there will be treats, such as candies, cupcakes
with pink icing or a heart-shaped cake.
Passing A Small Present Inside Several Boxes
But you can play games as well, like having a small
present wrapped inside several boxes, and having it
go around a circle with each child unwrapping part of
it until the music stops, and then passing it on. There
are books and websites for crafts, many other games
to play, stories to tell, and all sorts of Valentine’s
Day ideas for children.
But some of the best Valentine Day ideas that go beyond
the standard conception of romance involve things you
can do for others, including those who are alone themselves,
with no special partner, or people who are in unfortunate
situations.
Send A Gift Basket For A Valentines Dinner
For example, you could make up a basket with the fixings
for a nice Valentines dinner and send it anonymously
to a couple who have had a really hard time recently.
Or you and your family could visit a hospital or a nursing
home, taking presents to people to surprise them and
brighten their day.
Don’t forget to treat yourself well, even if you aren’t
currently paired off with anyone. You can still think
of Valentine’s Day ideas to make this day special for
you or someone you care about.
There’s nothing to say you can’t treat yourself to
a Valentines dinner after an evening at the theater,
for example. Or you could make this a day to clean the
house for a friend who is ill, or take presents to someone
who is shut-in. Valentine’s Day doesn’t have to be only
about romance, but can be a day of showing that you
care.

More Valentines Day Facts....
How has Valentine’s Day changed over the years?
Though Pope Gelasius officially
declared February 14th Valentine’s Day in 498 AD, it
was not widely practiced. There are some letters and
cards’ dating to this time and that of Henry the VIII
but it was still not a widely celebrated holiday.
This day for love did not really
take off until the 17th century. At that time people
began exchanging small tokens of affection with their
loved ones but it seemed to be limited to the upper
classes. During the 18th century it became popular with
all social and economic classes to send gifts and love
notes to those they cared about.
From there it became more mass
produced as pre-made cards became available. And now
today you can easily find trinkets, poems, cards and
many other assorted Valentine’s Day traditions associated
with February 14th.
