Travel Destinations With Affordable Ideas

By Julia Barnes

Travel destinations like Barcelona and Italy can be unattainable this year, even with a shaky economy, uncertain job security and mounting financial pressures. But that doesn’t mean Americans have to sacrifice their hard-earned and much needed trips abroad.

In fact, there are many low-cost holiday destinations to review your options, if the staycations aren’t an option this year. You can still have access to fine dining, a spa service or two, beaches and entertainment even if it’s not the usual luxury location, says Concierge Magazine.

Little Corn Island, Nicaragua is a poor man’s Costa Rica. Its southern neighbor used to be just as inexpensive, but once rampant industrialization and international development began taking off, the hotel rates skyrocketed to over $400/night at the larger resorts.

Traveling Without Paying Over Inflated Prices

By contrast, the most luxurious hotel accommodation -- the InterContinental in Managua -- costs less than $150. A beer will cost you $3, while you relax on this secluded tropical island. If you like snorkeling or diving, then you will enjoy the same luxuries as travelers on a Belize vacation, but without the over-inflated prices.

Forget paying $150 for a dive when you can take the plunge for $35 in Nicaragua. The colorful Casa Iguana offers colorful and private beach bungalows for just $35/night.

A lavish lobster dinner at Paraiso Beach Hotel on Big Corn Island will set you back about $20. Flights to destinations like Managua or Big Corn Island cost about $300 during the low season or $600 during high season.

Take Surfing Lessons In Barbados

Barbados is a poor man’s Hawaii, with its upscale resorts (like Sandy Lane), its miles of pristine beaches and its excellent surf. If you’ve never surfed before, then you can take lessons at Zed’s Surfing Adventures for $80, including board rental.

Instead of paying $6 or $7 for a beer, you’ll pay $4 for a local Banks beer. Instead of paying $400 or more for your plush resort accommodations in travel destinations like Hawaii, stay in the guesthouse village of Bathsheba for $136.

A Beach Restaurant With An Outdoor Deck

In the evening, a chef will cook dinner for you in a semi-outdoor patio and you’ll refill your own rum punch as needed. Dina’s is a nearby beach restaurant with a fun outdoor deck, fresh flying fish, Bajan hot sauce and cold beer. American Airlines and Air Jamaica offer $400 round-trip deals from Atlanta, New York City and Miami if you plan in advance.

Stretching Your Dollars In Poland

Warsaw, Poland is a poor man’s Prague, Czech Republic. One of the few European travel destinations not yet on the Euro is Poland, so your U.S. dollars will stretch further there. Poland may not have the luxuriant beaches of Spain, the dramatic history of Germany, or the world-famous cuisine of Italy, so tourists don’t necessarily flock there.

You can, however, party with a bunch of people who love Americans for just $3 a beer (Tyskie or Zwiec, most likely). Like Germany or the Czech Republic, Warsaw’s nightlife is diverse, with a mix of gothic clubs, hetero-friendly gay clubs, dance halls and pubs.

Hotel Rialto is decked out in a Roaring Twenties vibe and offers rooms for $175/night. Restaurants serving lamb, duck and wine will cost about $80 for two. For cheap air travel fares, check out LOT or Czech Airlines.

Please note: Prices and packages may change without notice. Please contact travel agents, airlines, service providers and or websites for the most current prices and packages.

More Staycation Facts....

How long have people been enjoying staycation?
Technically people have been enjoying staycations for hundreds of years. Most people simply called it a day off or a sick day. But the buzz word has now made its way into commercials so that people are looking at staying at home in a more appealing manner.

Just because you are staying home does not mean you cannot get some rest and relaxation. If anything, staycations are even more relaxing because you are in the comfort of your own home. So you can call the time off anything you wish.
