To Australia In The Summer Time

By Julia Barnes

The film "Crocodile Dundee" captured our imagination. Suddenly, we wanted to be riding jeeps through the Australian outback to rescue endangered kangaroos, we wanted to crack a bull whip, we wanted to see snakes and crocodiles in the wild, and we wanted to enjoy a nice can of Fosters at the pub.

So we travel to Australia, one of the biodiversity capitals of the world. It is a place where Christmas comes in the summer, flying fox bats the size of our dogs squabble in trees and the surf is always amazing.

If you’re looking for flights to Australia, then you may want to first check and review one of the four main air carriers, which are Qantas, JetStar, Tiger Airways and Virgin Blue. Qantas has been around the longest and, as a result, offers the most options.

Flying Around Australia

They have a flyer miles program and offer specials, like a flight from LA or San Francisco to Sydney for $1098 round trip. Flying from NYC would cost you $300 more. Tiger Airways is new as of 2007 and offers cheaper fares, as does discount airliner JetStar.

Once you’re in Australia, if you need to fly around, then you’ll likely go through Regional Express (Rex Airlines), which flies to South Australia, Adelaide, Canberra, Melbourne, Sydney, Maryborough, Broken Hill, Olympic Dam and Coober Pedy.

Escaping The Cold Winter To The Hot Summer In Australia

Australia sometimes offers "value travel passes" for as low as $499, which covers unlimited standby travel for a month. If you’re flying to smaller cities in Western Australia and the Northern Territory, then you can catch a flight with Skywest.

You can fly into Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide, Alice Springs, Cairns, Darwin or Tasmania. You should plan your trip to Australia carefully, as the seasons are completely different than what you’re used to. Summer runs from December to February. Yes, Christmas is in the "summer!"

Local Climatic Conditions

Temperatures also vary, depending on where you are in the country. For example, if you’re in the tropical regions, then temperatures range between 30-50 Celsius in the summer, with a lot of humidity and rainfall. Due to floods, some national park trails or activities may be closed. During the dry season, which is May to October, the average temperature is 20 degrees Celsius.

In the drier regions of Australia, the summer is 40 degrees on average, while the winter drops down to 16-24 degrees Celsius. Night time temperatures can reach 19 degrees and areas of Central Australia are experiencing drought. Temperate Australia ranges from 30 degrees in the summer to 15 in the winter.

Winters can be cold, wet and windy in some parts of Australia, but pale in comparison to northern America. Spring is September to November and autumn is March to May, and the milder weather and comfortable temperatures make it an optimal time to fly to Australia.

Hiking And Cycling Trails

You can come to Australia and have an amazing time without spending a dime! In Perth, hike the extremely long (963 km) Bibbulmun Track or cycle the eucalyptus forested Munda Biddi Bike Trail.

Visit the Federation Walkway for a stunning view of King’s Park botanical gardens, stroll along, watch a sunset at Cottlesloe Beach, fish at Palm Beach, catch a crab at Peel Inlet, bird watch at Lake Monger, climb the DNA Tower at King’s Park and take a gander at John Forrest National Park.

Free Attractions In The Australian Outback

In the Australian outback, you can see many free attractions: Wave Rock, Twilight Bay, Kokerbin Rock, the Kalgoorie Walk Trail, Mount Augustus National Park, Kennedy Range National Park, Gwalia Ghost Town, Lake Ballard, the Telegraph Station Ruins of Eucla and Israelite Bay.

In Sydney, you can see Jazz in the Park, hear Symphony in the Park or watch the Festival First Night concerts (in January). January also features the Australia Day air show, fireworks and ferry race. The Tropfest film festival in February is free, as is the Sydney Mardi Gras in March.

May brings the annual Manly Food/Wine Festival, June offers a great Harbor Jazz & Blues Festival, July has the Aroma Coffee Festival and August has the City to Surf Fun Run.

Why is it named ‘Australia?’
Australia is named for the Latin world "Australis" and literally means "Southern." The name came to be from early explorers such as the Romans. Many people had heard of some unknown land in the south but it was not until 1625 that the term Australia was actually used to describe this wild and untamed land.
