What is the history behind Sydney?
Most people associate Australia
with the British and the Aborigines but it goes back
farther than that. Scientists now believe that the entire
Sydney region was been inhabited for 30,000 through
the use of carbon dating. The first people were the
Cadigal people.
It is funny but when the British
arrived they asked the indigenous people of the area
where they were from. The people replied "Eora" so the
British called them this not understanding that in their
language "Eora" meant "here."
Later as more British fleets
arrived they colonized the area as a penal settlement.
Criminals from other British land holdings would be
sent to the Sydney area.
Later the British determined
that the area was not suitable for this purpose because
there was a lack of fresh water and had poor soil conditions
so they moved the convict settlement farther up the
coast to what was named Sydney Cove after the British
Home Secretary, Thomas Townshend, Lord Sydney.
It was not until the 19th century
that Sydney actually began to flourish as more people
flocked to this native land. Since then it has continued
to grow. With having such a unique and interesting history
it does make it an ideal vacation spot so a Sydney vacation
could also be a chance to see pieces of history not
found anywhere else.
