Stay At Home Vacation Online Dating Secret Friends Guide
Stay At Home Vacation For The Best Bang For Your Buck
By Julia Barnes
Nine months after moving, 24-year-old Sarah Outland
of Chicago, Illinois took a week-long stay-cation to
explore her new city. She visited famous landmarks,
went shopping, ate at top-rated restaurants and attended
museums.
A stay at home vacation was just what she needed! Often
times, we live in wonderful cities, but we work so much
we never have a chance to really enjoy it. Taking a
successful staycation involves a certain amount of planning
and discipline -- just like any type of vacation.
Taking the time to read the area papers, checking out
restaurant reviews and researching online news for the
most popular tourist destinations within the city can
really ensure that fun and relaxation take precedence
over chores and channel-surfing.
Getting The Getaway Experience In Your Home Town
To plan stay at home vacations, Pauline Frommer of
Pauline Frommer's Travel Guides recommends that you
stay in a nearby hotel for the full "getaway"
experience. Consult guidebooks at www.frommers.com,
www.fodors.com
and www.lonelyplanet.com
to find what tourists like most about your city.
Websites like www.chowhound.com
or www.roadfood.com
can help you review and find the best local eateries.
She says it's important that you leave your technology
behind, such as computers and cell phones that might
beckon you back to work. This is a week for your relaxation
and rejuvenation, after all.
Taking Your Work Home And Seeking Respite
Dr. Ilene Serlin of the San Francisco Psychological
Association says that technology can be a real deterrent
for a stay at home vacation. On one hand, we can work
more hours and be more productive and connected than
ever.
On the other hand, it can cause "terrible stress,"
says Serlin, "and there's no respite from it."
People who take their work home will have a need to
travel to find respite because the home becomes a secondary
place of business -- not quite the sanctuary we'd like
to create.
Posting A Vacation Away Message
It can be difficult to unplug and unwind, she admits.
Checking email can become an obsession, so post a vacation-away
message to let coworkers know you'll respond after your
holiday.
"We have this sense of obligation to work,"
Dr. Serlin says. "Or maybe [we] even think that
the boss thinks we ought to give a call or do something.
The reality is that may not at all be what the boss
is thinking."
A Perfect Paradise In Your Backyard
A stay at home vacation can give you the best "bang
for your buck," says 42-year-old oil entrepreneur
David Mitchell. "There are no security checkpoints
in my yard," he says proudly.
Over the years, he's developed his South Windsor, Connecticut
backyard into the perfect paradise, with lush flower
gardens, an entertainment area and a pool with a water
slide. In the past, he says he felt that he had to get
his money's worth, "so it was go-go-go, all the
time, to see all the sites."
With a staycation, he has the freedom of choice to
do as he pleases and take down-time as needed, without
feeling guilty.
