Parenting Skills With Tips And Hints
By Janine Jensenoris
New parents are inundated with horror stories and warnings
about the dangers to their child and may question if
their parenting skills will be enough. It is not any
wonder that would-be parents become petrified at the
thought of all the things that could go wrong.
It might be choking on a spoonful of peanut butter
or falling off a building. Some are a little far fetched
and not likely to happen, but it does not change the
persistent terrors that accompany being a parent.
Should there by a systematic training for effective
parenting? Does such a thing even exist outside the
imagination of parenting books? Can there be the perfection
of parenting skills that all "experts" advocate?
No.
Perfection In Parenting Is A Matter Of Opinion
With a resounding cry, it is impossible to have perfect
parenting skills. No matter what a parent does there
will be someone else saying that they should have done
it a different way. It is the way of the world and advice
in particular.
Experts in the field of children and trainers for parenting
skills constantly disagree with each other on how to
raise a child. Parents disagree with each other and
even the experts.
Babysitting A Child With Television
It comes down to it all being a matter of opinion.
Advice is pretty much an opinion and opinions are a
dime a dozen. One parent may let their child watch television
and another become horrified at the parent for allowing
television to baby sit the child.
One of the most important of all of the parenting skills
that one must acquire and review, is that of patience.
Babies, children and teens tend to do things at their
own pace. A parent getting themselves in a rush can
only cause the child to slow down even more.
Children Testing The Boundaries
When a parent loses his or her patience the child senses
this frustration. Tempers begin heating up and words
and actions can become used that might not be the most
appropriate action.
Another skill is the ability to not get upset and take
something personally. Children often do not mean to
say certain things. They go through periods of testing
their boundaries. Perhaps it is best to think of these
ventures into independence as a preview for the teenage
years.
Tips And Hints Online
There are many websites and books that offer parents
a way to improve their parenting skills. These sites
can be found by doing a simple search on something like
Google. Magazines and parenting books are another great
resource for those seeking to better their parenting
skills.
Parenting magazine offers tips and hints for every
age group. Finicky eaters, restless toddlers and teething
babies are just some of many topics that are covered.
There is also the acclaimed "What to Expect..."
series of books that begin with pregnancy and work their
way up.
Be Prepared For Challenges
There will be good days and there will be bad. There
will be laughter and tears. Impeccable parenting skills
are a myth. Each parent will struggle at some point
and wonder if they are doing the right thing. Will their
child turn out okay?
With patience and understanding that difficult times
will occur, it will happen. The child may not always
agree but at least they will be loved, protected and
provided for by loving parents.
