Panama Canal Cruises Are Popular Getaways
By Julia Barnes
Visiting the Wonders of the World is more than just
climbing Mount Everest, snorkeling the Great Barrier
Reef or hiking the Grand Canyon. There are also ancient
wonders like the Great Wall of China, the Leaning Tower
of Pisa and the Great Pyramid of Giza, as well as modern
wonders like the Channel Tunnel, the Empire State Building
and the Panama Canal.
The best way to see the Panama Canal, naturally, is
aboard one of the Panama Canal cruises. This 50-mile-long
man-made river took more than 35 years and $352 million
to build, but in the end it saved ships nearly 8,000
miles in Pacific/Atlantic cruises and shipping travels.
Along the way, you’ll see thriving South American resort
towns and hidden jungle gems offering high seas adventure.
Cruising From The East Or West Coast Of America
A number of major cruise lines offer Panama Canal cruises
venturing from the east or west coast of America. Cruises
vary in duration; 7-9 days (Regent Seas, NCL), 10-11
days (Princess, Costa, Holland America, Crystal, Royal
Olympia), 14-16 days (Princess, Carnival, Celebrity,
Silversea) or 18-21 days (Princess, Hollans America,
Cunard).
Most people prefer to traverse from Miami, Tampa or
Fort Lauderdale, Florida or from Californian ports like
San Diego, Los Angeles or San Francisco. These Pacific
and Atlantic cruises often call in the Western Caribbean,
Costa Rica, Colombia and Panama regions. You can choose
to cruise the entire 50-mile canal or hop off at a nearby
port city for a day of adventure.
Clear-Bottom Kayaking
The Carnival Group offers popular 14-day Panama Canal
cruises beginning in Los Angeles and ending in Miami.
Along the way, you’ll go clear-bottom kayaking in Cozumel,
swimming with the dolphins in Puerto Vallarta, "4x4ing"
in San Lucas and exploring caverns in Calica.
You’ll see waterfalls and botanical gardens in Ochos
Rios, Jamaica. You can golf or lay on the beach in Manzanilla,
Mexico; you can visit a marine park, play at Jaco Beach
or gamble in Costa Rica’s Puntarenas. In Cartagena,
you can marvel at ancient churches, monasteries and
relics from times past and you can sail a catamaran,
sport fish, scuba dive or snorkel in the Cayman Islands.
Open Air Shopping And Beach Nightclubs
Once you make it to Miami, you’ll be treated to open
air shopping, beach night clubs and delicious ethnic
cuisine. The Carnival Liberty and Carnival Miracle are
among the top contenders for cruises to the Panama Canal.
The best way to get deals on Panama Canal cruises is
to shop around and book in advance. For the 2009-2010
season, Crystal Cruises is offering free one-way airfare
with their cruises for guests originating from Los Angeles,
Miami, Fort Lauderdale or Palm Beach.
Sailing 7-17 Days Cruises
You can also save up to 50% by sailing 7-17 days on
Panama Canal, South American, Western European, New
England, Canadian, Amazon, Atlantic-Pacific, Mediterranean
and Caribbean cruises. "Partial transits are a
more affordable way to cruise the Panama Canal,"
explains Cheryl Cunningham, manager at Vacations To
Go.
She adds that you can book round-trip airfare and hop
aboard the cruise while in the area, rather than taking
off the full 14 days to transit from America to the
Panama Canal zone.

More Mediterranean Cruises Facts....
Will I need a passport in order to take Mediterranean
cruises?
Anytime you travel out of your
home country, you need a passport. This is especially
true of Mediterranean cruises. You will be visiting
many different areas and your passport will be checked
and stamped. Plus if you are flying in from the United
States, you will need a passport anyway to leave the
country.
Security is very important to
all countries these days so a proper passport is always
needed. Just remember that if you do not have a passport,
you will need to apply for one several months in advance
of your trip. You can rush the process but you are going
to be paying more for the passport.
