Being Together On Valentines Day
By John Rafter
St Valentines Day can be an intimidating holiday because
so much emphasis is placed on this one day as "a
true test of how much we love or are loved." There
are so many expectations and so many competing stories
flying around. Everyone wants to feel special, but it’s
important that the simple things aren’t lost.
A simple "I love you" note placed on the
nightstand or freshly-baked cookies can mean so much.
There are so many ways to celebrate on Valentines Day,
so it’s best to talk about the ideal celebration before
the day comes so there can be surprises, but only good
ones.
Perhaps you and your partner are the fun-loving, active
types. It doesn’t really feel like a "date"
unless you’re out somewhere, experiencing new things
together. There are many fun things to do on St. Valentines
Day with a little foresight. Skip the Valentine Day
flowers and spend your money on a fun activity instead.
A Wine Tasting Getaway
Perhaps you can take a wine tasting getaway; stay at
a cozy bed-and-breakfast and visit three or four wineries,
if you can. Throw in a theater performance or a nice
dinner and you have got the perfect date! Another idea
is to plan a day trip within 100 miles of home. Pack
up the sandwiches and snacks, fuel up the car and bring
the camera! You can go on a hot air balloon ride, on
a day cruise, out to the lake, to a special event, to
a historic site or to a national park.
Since February can be cold and snowy in some parts
of the US, you may want to plan to go snowmobiling,
snow-shoeing or skiing if you’re the outdoors-y type.
For a more extravagant getaway, why not try one of the
inexpensive packages to Las Vegas?
A Home Cooked Meal
The activities you choose to do on St. Valentines Day
don’t have to cost you a fortune. There’s no need to
dread a romantic Valentine day when you can have a cheap
Valentines Day, without it resembling something cheap.
A home-cooked meal can carry much more sentimentality
than a scripted night out.
If you’re a stranger to the kitchen, then you could
easily cook up Fettuccine Alfredo using a box of noodles
and a jar of sauce, adding chopped up/steamed vegetables
(broccoli, mushrooms or peppers) and boiled shrimp to
garnish. Buy a nice bottle of wine, light candles and
play classical music to set the mood. Don’t forget some
chocolates for dessert. Voila!
Being Single On Valentines Day
If you’re single on Valentines Day, then this can be
one of the more devastating days of the year. As much
as you try to tell yourself it doesn’t matter, you might
end up feeling lonely anyway or sad when you hear what
everyone else did. Some people celebrate the holiday
with their dogs or buy a puppy to ease the loneliness.
Take a road trip on your own and learn to enjoy your
own company. Or you may want to get outside and exercise
or try something new, like karate classes, yoga, skiing
or parasailing. Some people hold a Valentines party
for all the other singles they know. Send Valentines
in the mail to all your crushes; no harm, right? Doing
nice things for others is a self-less way to remove
your self-pity.
Speed Dating
Heck, you can even serve up some grub at the local
soup kitchen to focus your love outwards. If you’re
hell-bent on turning your luck around and having a romantic
Valentines after all, then often cities will hold singles-mingle
events like "Speed Dating." You will be introduced
to 10+ people and decide who you’d like to spend more
time with. Keep your fingers crossed, since if the feeling’s
mutual, you could have an amazing "how did you
meet" story!
Guys, you may think you have figured it out, but there
are also many things to avoid on Valentines Day. It
goes without saying that you should not forget about
the holiday. Circle it on your calendar, set a cell
phone reminder, whatever it takes, just do not miss
this opportunity to show your partner you care. The
last thing you want is your loved one to think you’ve
intentionally tried to let her down.
Offer Something Unique And From The Heart
Secondly, do not propose on Valentines Day: it’s too
cliché. Definitely don’t offer a ring box because she
will think you’re proposing, only to be disappointed
when it’s not "the ring." Thirdly, don’t get
caught up on the "standard" Valentines gifts.
Roses, chocolates and Hallmark greetings are better
than nothing, but a woman always prefers something unique
and from-the-heart.
Next, avoid showing up at a restaurant and expecting
to be seated! Reservations, reservations, reservations!
Otherwise, stay at home and cook her something. Lastly,
keep the drama out; no exes, no fighting and no comparing
this St Valentines Day to past ones. Remember, today
is all about taking a moment to appreciate one another.
Don’t let high expectations or poor communication ruin
your time.

What are traditional gifts to give on Valentines Day?
The gifts that you give should
come from the heart. But there are traditional gifts
that are associated with Valentines Day. Many women
enjoy receiving flowers, candies or balloons on this
special day. You can also give greeting cards, jewelry
or even treat your loved one to a romantic dinner.
Do not forget the kids though.
Kids get a huge thrill out of receiving cards from their
loved ones. Chances are they will trade cards at school
but it is still nice to give a gift to your children.
They enjoy candy and stuffed animals just as much as
an adult and even possibly more.
