Lucid Dreaming And Triggering Dream Consciousness
By Janine Jensenoris
Did you ever have a dream where you were caught up in
torrid passion with a seductive stranger, only to wake
up just before any serious action could take place?
Or maybe you were reliving nostalgic pastimes with someone
who is no longer in your life.
It may have felt so real, you woke up feeling emotionally
stirred, wishing it could last. Some people believe
that there is a way to make these dreams last, that
there is a way to trigger dream consciousness, and that
you can actually prolong or manipulate your behavior
with the realization that you are "lucid
dreaming."
Many people wonder if it’s even possible to review
and encounter dream consciousness, where they can think
and behave as they would in waking life, but without
all the physical limitations of our known reality.
Realising This Is Just A Dream
"Yes, lucid dreaming exists," says Dr. Rodney
Radtke, a medical director and dream research scientist
at the Duke University Sleep Disorders Center. "Yes,
people certainly can, within their dream, realize ‘this
is just a dream’ and continue to participate,"
he adds.
"Do I believe that someone could potentially alter
or interact with their dreams in such a way that they
could change the dream? Yes." However, Radtke disputes
whether an individual can simply design a complex dream
and make it happen. "Only in New York or California
do they worry about this stuff," he laughs.
Learning The Techniques Of Lucid Dreaming
Dr. Stephen LaBerge is a psychophysiologist and the
founder of the Lucidity Institute (www.lucidity.com).
He runs a series of relaxing retreats in Kalani, Hawaii,
where participants learn the techniques of lucid
dreaming.
He says many of the retreat attendees want to know
how to fly, to have sex in their dreams, to overcome
nightmares and to problem solve. To help induce lucid
dreams, Dr. LaBerge has invented a mask called the NovaDreamer,
which shines a subtle light on dreamers during REM sleep
to remind them of their goals to dream with lucidity,
without waking them up.
Strong Spatial And Visualization Skills
People may also sample a herbal drug that triggers
the release of acetylcholine, a neuro-transmitting compound
affecting memory.
Dream research psychologists aren’t sure exactly what
makes some people more prone to lucid dreaming than
others, but they have noticed similar patterns. Dr.
Jayne Gackenbach says people who have lucid dreams tend
to have strong spatial and visualization skills.
Not Everyone Is Convinced About Conscious Dreams
They may be able to envision how the inner parts of
a machine work or be able to sew a dress from scratch.
Many lucid dreamers are avid meditators, she says. Even
though there is some merit to the study of conscious
dreams, not everyone is so convinced.
Dr. Edward Nersessian, a clinical professor of psychiatry
at Weill Cornell Medical College, shrugs off the importance
of lucidity, saying, "Whatever you manage or do
not manage to do with the manifest content isn’t really
that relevant.
That’s like a screen behind which lies all sorts of
answers which you have to go digging for."

More Dreams Facts....
Can your dreams actually be telling you something?
Whether your dreams are actually
telling you something or warning you about a situation
all depends on what you believe. Some people really
place great stock in what their dreams say to them.
And there are hundreds of books written on dream
interpretation.
If you are particularly stressed
out about something at work then that may be manifested
in your dreams. Many new parents have nightmares about
losing their children or something catastrophic happening
to them.
Many people would take this to
mean that they are feeling out of control and are fearful
of losing their children. Dreaming is a personal to
each individual so what you think your dreams mean and
what someone else things they mean may be two different
ideas.
