Interpret Dreams To Find Solutions
By Janine Jensenoris
Dream analysis has been a realm of study dating back
to the ancient Chinese and Egyptians, with much meaning
ascribed to our night visions. Today, little has changed.
Professors at Carnegie Mellon University have been running
a series of studies about how people interpret dreams
and have come to some interesting conclusions.
"Psychologists’ interpretations of the meaning
of dreams vary widely, but our research shows that people
believe their dreams provide meaningful insight into
themselves and their world," says Carey Morewedge,
the study’s lead author.
In several different studies, researchers surveyed
1,100 people about their dreams. One study conducted
by Michael Norton of the Harvard Business School found
that cross-culturally, the majority of students believed
that the world of dreams revealed truths about themselves
and their waking world.
Finding Omens In Your Dreams
Another study surveying Boston commuters uncovered
that many review and interpret their dreams as omens.
For instance, people who dreamt about plane crashes
were more likely to change their flights than people
who heard about elevated terrorism warnings or people
who simply thought about the possibility of a crash.
"Most people understand that dreams are unlikely
to predict the future but that doesn’t prevent them
from finding meaning in their dreams, whether their
contents are mundane or bizarre," found Morewedge.
Preparing Your Emotions
Researcher Elizabeth Mohkamsing-den Boer conducted
a dream study among indigenous Surinamese and Australian
tribes to see how they interpret dreams. "Dreams
prepare your emotions," was a comment she heard
from many of the study participants.
When grappling with the decision to become a religious
specialist, one of the study participants reported having
dreams of her grandfather, who was a healer, which served
as a sign.
Finding Support During Important Life Transitions
Other Surinamese said dreams sometimes predict the
future death of elderly parents, which prepares their
emotions for the inevitable. The dream world serves
to support us during important life transitions, Mohkamsing
concluded.
Behavioral psychologist Deirdre Barrett PhD of Harvard
Medical School says that people often interpret dreams
as problem solving tools. Since we often think about
problems or dilemmas before falling asleep, it’s our
natural tendency to dream of these things during the
night.
Finding Solutions In Their Dreams
Not surprisingly, many of us come to conclusions upon
waking and find some merit in our dream world discoveries
-- hence the saying, "I’ll sleep on it." She
points to her own dream research, where half of her
students report arriving at a resolution for a problem
in their dreams.
Additionally, she says, there are a number of stories
from generals and scientists who thought of their most
brilliant plans during their sleep.

More Dreams Facts....
Is studying dreams really a science?
There really is a science and study
of dreams. It is called oneirology. The name is actually
derived from oneiros which means dream and logia which
mean the study of. Researchers study the different types
of dreams that can occur to a person while they are
in REM sleep.
The two types are authentic dreaming
and illusory dreaming. In authentic dreaming the dreams
you have tend to be more factual. It is actual things
that you could do or perform. Illusory dreaming is often
confusing and bizarre. It may be some really impossible
such as you jumping from a building and flying. Illusory
dreaming has actually been linked to certain mental
disorders.
