In Australia With Better Livable Cities

By Julia Barnes

In America, with rising inflation, debt, healthcare, food and fuel costs, it’s tempting to just pick up and leave the country altogether. You may be wondering, "What do American immigrants think of Australian society?"

Liberals often flock to live in Australia because they view it as a more socialist-leaning nation that has a safer, drug-free environment and a "no worries" mentality. Yet, many American expatriates grumble about Australia’s strong central government, high taxes and overly generous welfare system.

Despite their complaints, many Americans stay in Oz. They review their options and get attached to the landscape, they love the brazen honesty of Australians and they find homes they love.

Moving To Australia

If you’re an American who has moved to Australia, then you likely experienced a period of culture shock. At first, you may have found yourself confused, frustrated or agitated by certain cultural differences that seemed minute before you became embedded in Australian society.

You’ve probably heard the rumor that Americans aren’t exactly "loved" around the world, courtesy of George W. Bush. This isn’t necessarily true in Oz, as many Australians are ambivalent about Americans.

A Positive Experience

Some Americans reported that they felt they didn’t belong or couldn’t advance in jobs because of their "Yankee" accents, although 75% of Americans said their migration was a positive experience, without any discrimination.

Australian society is fairly liberal in its treatment of those "in need." Their welfare system is funded by slightly higher taxes than you may be used to, but if you’re ever in a pinch, then the government will take care of you.

Education In Government Schools

If you have school-age children, then their education will be paid-for, and the Australian tertiary educational system is on par with US and the UK. Additionally, healthcare in Australia is covered for citizens, although privately funded policies are also available if you prefer.

According to the 2008 Quality of Life Index, Sydney is the "10th most livable city" in the world. Auckland was rated 5th, but Sydney fared better than other Australian cities on the list, which included South Australia (12th), Melbourne (17th), Adelaide (29th) and Brisbane (34th).

Better Livable Cities In Australia

By comparison, the best American city was ranked 28th and world-class Paris was down at 32nd. "The fact that Australian cities enjoy among the best standards of living in the world reinforces the attractiveness of Australia for workers and for multinational organizations," stated Mercer survey spokesman Rob Knox.

"Our major cities continue to tick all of the boxes [with] established infrastructure and transport facilities, quality housing close to the city, a wide selection of restaurants and other amenities, as well as a good educational system and environment."
