Dream Meanings Reinforcing Existing Attitudes
By Janine Jensenoris
Can dreams come true? Some spiritualists believe that
our nighttime visions are prophecies of the future.
Neurologists have posited that our dream time experiences
are simply byproducts of our information sorting processes
that occur during sleep. Psychoanalysts say that dreams
reveal our innermost desires and wishes.
After researching more than 1,000 college student dreamers
from South Korea, India and the United States, psychologists
from Carnegie Mellon University and Harvard believe
that dream meanings may have something to do with our
established set of beliefs and stereotypes.
In dream research and studying the meanings of dreams,
psychologists Carey K. Morewedge and Michael I. Norton
asked college students in South Korea, India and the
U.S. how much significance they attached to dreams.
Looking For Hidden Underlying Conclusions
Psychologists wanted to know: Do they think dreams
are random impulses, mechanized information sorting,
or the revealing of unconscious emotions? The vast majority
of students fell into the Freudian school of thought,
surmising that there are hidden underlying conclusions
from dreams.
Furthermore, they felt sometimes dreams come true and
that they should heed any warnings. For instance, the
students were more likely to review their options and
cancel their plane trip if they had a dream about the
flight crashing the night before the trip, rather than
if there was an actual plane crash on their route or
if the terrorist threat level had gone up a notch.
Negative Dreams About People You Dislike
Interestingly enough, researchers found that people
ascribed greater significance to dream meanings that
coincided with their preconceived notions. For instance,
they saw negative dreams about people they disliked
as being very significant. Similarly, they gave more
weight to positive dreams about friends.
Individuals rated a dream about a friend protecting
him/her from attackers higher in meaning than a dream
about that same friend kissing one’s romantic partner.
In the world of dreams, they were willing to overlook
the dreams that contradicted their conscious beliefs,
but they believed the dreams that reinforced their attitudes
were extremely important.
Dreams Reinforce Existing Attitudes
According to Dr. Morewedge, "The apparently unintended
nature of dreams leads people to attribute greater meaning
to dreams than to similar thoughts they had while
awake."
In other words, dream meanings reinforce our existing
attitudes, stereotypes and beliefs -- and by encountering
these things while dreaming, we’re given signs that
we were correct in our thinking. "When friends
and loved ones have disturbing dreams, one may need
to do more than say, ‘It was just a dream,’" advises
Dr. Morewedge.
"It may also be a good idea not to tell people
about their undesirable behavior in your dreams, as
they may infer that your dreams reveal your true feelings
about them."
