Boomer Women Online Dating Secret Friends Guide
Boomer Women Face New Life Complexities
By Janine Jensenoris
Boomer women have a lot on their minds these days.
Balancing the check book, what to make for dinner tonight,
where to find that outfit for the company meeting, how
they’ll make it in time to pick the kids up from soccer
practice, and whether or not they can afford
retirement.
Baby boomer women face new complexities. Sometimes
divorce, mid-life dating and solo child rearing or other
times a postponed family life due to career ambitions.
This massive force of 41 million women is one of the
most sought after marketing demographics, which has
tilted the economic balance in surprising ways.
Boomer Women Have The Power Of The Purse
Boomer women influence as much as 80% of the $2.1 trillion
spent on consumer goods by the baby boomer population
as a whole. Marketing to boomers, particularly female
boomers, is unlike any other demographic before.
For the first time in history, the "power of the
wallet" moniker has been replaced with "the
power of the purse," as women take a much more
active role in purchasing decisions.
Since many women work and pull in paychecks of their
own, they decide how and where their money gets spent
in most cases. These women have fueled new consumer
markets for anti-aging beauty products, kitchen appliances
and women’s fashion, to name a few.
Bigger And More Luxurious Homes
Additionally, the living space needs have changed with
the boomer generation as well. The average home size
went from 1,470 square feet in the fifties and sixties
to 2,100 square feet today.
Only fifteen percent of older houses had a second bathroom,
whereas today two or more bathrooms are standard, with
en-suite bathrooms attached to the master bedroom more
often than not.
Empty Nesters Are Downsizing
For at least a decade, boomer women demanded larger,
more luxurious houses known as "McMansions."
However, once the kids move out of the house, many empty
nesters start to feel they own more house than they
really need, which has caused a massive shift toward
downsizing.
Ranches, condos and townhouses are becoming more popular,
as are active 55+ resorts, which provide everything
retiring baby boomers could ever want, like shopping,
entertainment, luxurious living and social gatherings.
Rising Demands For Health Care
Since boomer women will live, on average, 10-20 years
longer than their mothers, there will be rising demands
for health care. Preventative medicine dictates more
check-ups, doctor visits, prescription medications and
hospital bills, all which undoubtedly places a stress
on the system.
The market for age-assisting devices will likely go
through the roof. Given the unsteady market, for many
boomer women, retirement will be pushed back, which
makes it more difficult for young up-and-comers to find
jobs in the short term, yet will also produce an over-abundance
of vacant positions in the future.
Since women can’t just rely on their spouses
for financial security, their role as mother, worker,
wife and superwoman gets more complex when the time
comes to review their options around retirement time.
